Gardening Organically for Fun and Profit
The beginning of Organic Gardening
In the beginning settlers to the new world relied on 2 important things to survive:
1. Growing their own food
2. Fishing for their food.
Back then, there was no pesticides and fertilizers, all the food grown was organic. As the population of the world grew so did the need for more food. To supplement the need for more food scientist developed chemicals that would increase plant growth so that it would grow faster , bigger and reduce the harvesting times.
Back in the 80’s parts of the world became concerned that those chemicals being used leached their way back into the water we drink and the air we breathe. Thus we became more involved and organic gardening started to make a comeback. The US Department of Agriculture started persuading farmers to stop using chemicals and if they did they would grant them incentives.
Organic vegetable gardening is not only about reducing the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Farmers started using other methods to make plants grow (like composting), rotating crops, natural pest management methods.
Organic vegetable gardening has been successful since its conception in 1980. To illustrate this fact, several studies have shown that the quantity of corn and soybeans grown organically was really no different compared to farmers who used fertilizers and deadly pesticides. The exciting part of the studies proved that this can be done without any deadly chemicals that could enter our bodies. It has been proven by recent studies that if other countries would start organic vegetable gardening, they can double or even triple their crop production thus saving them money they would spend on chemicals and fertilizers. Another thing to look at is one half of our nations food supply comes from other countries who are not practicing good organic gardening techniques.
